Under the leadership of Michael Jackman OTM, BSc (Hons), CMgr, FCMI Deputy Commissioner of Police of Bermuda Police Service, Bermuda’s combined uniform services (Police, Fire, Corrections and Regiment) joined forces this fall to launch the Inter-service Tournament, an annual charity golf event that raised $20,480 for BHCT’s Why It Matters Campaign.
The tournament was held on Friday, 25th October 2013 at the Riddles Bay Golf and Country Club. A special highlight was the opportunity to win a new car by making a hole-in-one on Hole #17. Despite rainy weather, twenty-two teams from the various uniformed services and local companies battled for the honours at Riddell’s Bay Golf Course. Following the match, Governor George Fergusson and BHCT Executive Director Wendy Augustus awarded prizes to the winners at the Regiment’s Warwick Camp. A Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service team captured first place while a Police team secured second. A Department of Immigration team took third place, followed by the TBI (TeleBermuda) team at fourth, and additional Police and Fire service teams placing at fifth and sixth places respectively.
As the Inter-service Tournament Chairman, Deputy Police Commissioner Jackman, who organised the event as part of Police Week, said that the decision to designate BHCT as the service’s official charity for the year was an important one. “The hospital is a very important part of the community. We’ll all need it at some point,” he said. “It’s very important for all the services to be involved in community work. If we don’t go out and support the community, we will not get the support of the community when we need it.” In expressing her gratitude, Wendy Augustus, Executive Director of the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust, said: “We are so thankful — as we seek to provide first-class, 21st century care for Bermuda. We are grateful for the efforts of everyone on the Island for all they have done. In particular, the uniformed services are all connected to the hospital and critical to us. Their cooperation and synergy are vital.”
